Salem >Onyx Hair Salon INC
My only compliment about Onyx is that they have some of the trendy styles available, which can be difficult to find elsewhere in Roanoke (ex: feathers). However, their customer service SUCKS. I had to book several weeks in advance for a stylist, they are poor communicators, and they do not listen to instructions. (Every single time I went, I asked for NO HAIR PRODUCTS to be put in my hair and every single time I went home with a pound of product in my hair.) Their colorist are awful and have no clue what they're doing. Also, Rusk color (especially in brunette hues) is the worst I've experienced. It fades quickly and looks dull even when using color-safe products. Also, for the money, the salon looks good from a distance but trashy close up.
Glad I Went.
I moved here two years ago from Northern Virginia and used drive back there for haircuts. I was afraid to let someone new cut my hair because my hair is problematic, I tend to be a perfectionist, and I've always lived in major metropolitan areas where you can generally find the best stylists.
So it was with some trepidation that I went to a new salon. Now that I have, I wish I'd done it sooner. Kate did an excellent job with my hair--I love it. It's edgy yet age-appropriate. Kate cut and styled my hair for my features and hair type, and she took the time to show me how to work with my cowlicks when I style my new do at home. And finally, with Kate's guidance, I am using the right hair products.
The staff is friendly and helpful, and the salon has a comfortable atmosphere. If you're wondering where to go for your next haircut, I highly recommend Kate.
Some Good, Some Bad.
I'm torn on my experience there. I will start by saying that I think they are very reasonably priced. I received a cut and color and I loved the color (though I think she used semi permanent and not permanent as I requested). The cut was okay. Not really what I asked for but it wasn't horrible. The precision of the cut was good but it just wasn't the style I asked for.
My critiques are as follows: First of all, my stylist was NOT professionally dressed. She looked as if she was wearing clothes she would lounge around in at home. She wore NO make up and her hair was not styled. When I come to get my hair styled, I want the stylist to look put together and fashionable. I expected more based on their website and the fact that they market themselves as a high end, avant-garde salon.
Second, when my stylist applied the color, she did not take care to ensure that the color did not get on my skin. For several days afterwards, I had color stains on my skin. A little conditioner or petroleum jelly along the hairline would have prevented this.
Third, the conversation she chose to engage in was NOT professional. She talked about getting drunk and being hung over etc. That might be entertaining with your girlfriends but I don't think it's professional to engage in such conversations with clients, especially new ones.
Overall, I cannot say I had a bad experience but I do not think this salon is hitting the mark in all areas. This salon as the potential to be truly great but they need to work on some areas of professionalism. I'd probably go back because I did appreciate their technique with regards to color; however, it's not the high end salon experience I expect and have grown accustomed to in larger cities up north.
